Weight Converter
This calculator converts the weight of the gemstone.
The weight of the gemstone is one of the crucial aspects of the value of the gemstone especially in astrology. There is no standard text that specifies the number of weight one should wear because in the Sacred Puranas it is mentioned that if a person is to wear a gemstone then it should have transparency, illumination, sparkle along with adequate cut and should be free from impurities otherwise it can have undesirable effects.
Faceted gemstones are measured in a number of ways and the most common measurement is carat weight. The international standard of the metric carat was adopted in the United States by 1920 and this is the current standard for weighing gemstones. One metric carat = 0.2 gram (or 200 milligrams). However, before the International Standards of Weight, ‘Ratti’ was used to weigh gemstones which is still prevalent but debatable because of the slight difference in the value of Ratti among the various regions of India.
Please do not confuse ‘carats’ with ‘karats’. Karat measures gold purity and is only related. Bigger gems are always rarer than smaller ones. A 4 carat gem is always worth far more than four 1 carat gems of the same quality.
